Look, Sarge, No Grunt: Robots in Battle

Lockheed's MULE, a prototype UGV

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been around for a while. Some now carry air-to-ground armament in the form of Hellfire missiles. UGV - Unmanned Ground Vehicles - are a little more complicated. Mostly ’cause there’s more things to bump into down here. But they’re coming. Popular Science has an interesting round-up on how far Uncle Sam has gotten with unmanned ground forces.

  1. I am powerfully and nostalgically reminded of this. Also, how long do you think it will take after the MULE gets deployed for the jar-heads to name it “the coffin?”

  2. This was way better.

  3. true, but only the MULE had rockets. I thought the cannon was more… plural.

I actually did make use ot the tank/cannon. It was way cheaper to buy and reload, and I tried not to use my HWPs for kills, so the huge firepower deficit was less of an issue. The only drawback was its innability to clear terrain. It also made for more challenge, given how bad it sucked.

  4. Fools! When will governments and militaries realize that the development of war robots can only end in tears?

  5. I totally want a coffin like that. Mine would be the most memorable funeral EVER! :)

  6. awesome tears…

  7. ok, ok. another example of why T2 is one of the best movies ever:

[Lewis, the Guard buys a cup of coffee, just before he is introduced to the T-1000]
Lewis, the Guard: Hey Gwen, you want some coffee?
Gwen: No thanks. How ’bout a beer?
    Lewis, the Guard: Yeah, right.
Lewis, the Guard: Hey, I got a full house!
    Gwen: That’s good Lewis.
Lewis, the Guard: Must be my lucky day…
    [the T-1000 impales his head]

that never gets old… shame T3 was such a turd.

also: why didn’t I think of using the MULE as a coffin? that would be rad. “rusted angel killed you from beyond the grave!”

  8. If you click on my link above, our Online Think Tank wrote a book on UGV tactics in the modern battlespace, its in pdf and it is a pretty good read to make you think. I enjoyed your picture above and saved it as my screen saver slide show.
