Space Hulk SMASH!

Suffer not the alien to live!

A couple of Swedish guys have finished a 2D sprite-based remake of the classic Games Workshop board game Space Hulk, originally released in 1989. The board game was itself the inspiration for two computer games in the 1990s, but since then, little has been done with the license. Turns out it wasn’t even very hard for these guys to get permission to use these old copyrights. From the FAQ:

Games Workshp are quite generous with their work as long as you take measures to tell any players that everything are [GWs intellectual property] and that all rights belong to them […] Also this is freeware meaning we do not earn any money by using their ideas. This is first and foremost a tribute to a game they abandoned […] and something we have missed ever since.

Concerning Electronic Arts, we simply asked for permission and were granted use of images and ideas from their old game released in 1993.

So, if you’ve courage enough to lead some brave Space Marine Terminators into the depths of drifting hulks and drive out the stain of Genestealer infection, then download Space Hulk today!

  1. I have to recommend this game to anyone with an even passing interest in the old board or computer games. This version of Space Hulk is well thought-out, easy to learn and surprisingly challenging. The tension ratchets up quite quickly, especially if you’re like me and obsess about bringing everyone home.

Also, the little bits of Engrish sprinkled throughout the game are good for a laugh. The mission briefings are silly, and it’s hard not to smile when the game celebrates “the thriumping Alpha Squad!” The creators have so far given every indication that they intend to support the game with patches and additional content, and are encouraging their players to submit their own missions. Very cool stuff.

My one complaint is that stormbolters jam all the freaking time.

  2. Will try. More later.

  3. Remember, Rusty: as a loyal servant of Tzeentch, you win even if all your marines die. Death to the weakling Imperium!

  4. Kotaku catches up to O514. Ding!

  5. It’s like Tanith is a video games pre-cog…

  6. I CAN SEE THROUGH TIME

  7. What do you see in my future, Tanith?

  8. I see …

“….a birthday present from Vince! What a lovely packing job! My, it’s heavy, whatever it is. Rattles a bit when I shake it. Gently now! Oh, listen! Hear that? It must be a clock. I love clo-”

It gets a bit fuzzy after that.
