Uh Oh

rustedangel is about to E.X.P.L.O.D.E.

Quote: “Unlike the original, the new movie will be set in New Manhattan, a city rebuilt with Japanese cash.

According to Hollywood Reporter, Leonardo DiCaprio is going to produce a two-movie live action remake of the Japanese animated classic Akira. Apparently, the WB is going to have something to do with the production as well.

Presumably, if things keep going at this rate, Santa Claus will be raped to death by hungry velociraptors in November and Optimus Prime will hang himself in the next Transformers movie. I’m not saying this is guaranteed to fail, but does it really seem likely that the WB is going to be able to make this good? How are you supposed to improve upon the original, anyways?

…and why isn’t Hollywood making original movies anymore?

  1. Well, this Robinson fellow they’ve tapped to direct is an Oscar nominee, which theoretically means he isn’t a total flesh-waste. On the other hand, the Akira movies will his first feature films - big shoes to fill.

This isn’t doomed to mediocrity. The original movie was itself a compression of a much longer story, maybe dong it in two movies will allow the filmmakers to show more of Akira’s world. I suppose the best bet for now is to remain cautious for now, and see what the previews and trailers look like when they hit in a year or so.

  2. You’ve hit on the main problem here; these guys have already sold me the ticket. I admit that I will probably watch this, no matter how bad it is.

    I’m just bitter about it.

On the other hand, who knows? It might be a “V For Vendetta” quality cyberpunk thriller. Maybe. I hope.
