From the Newsfeed (have you noticed the Montreal newsfeed in the bottom right?):
UFC to make Canadian debut in MontrealRandy Phillips , Canwest News ServiceMONTREAL - Georges St-Pierre knows the violent and sometimes bloody nature of professional mixed martial arts isn’t for everyone, but he also believes a lot of people don’t know what the sport is all about.
[...]
“Many people, especially in Quebec, have a misconception about the sport,” the 26-year-old Montreal native added. “They see it as violent, and that’s it. They haven’t seen UFC yet, and when they do, maybe once they see the show, they’ll be changing their minds.”
Oh, sure. UFC isn’t violent. Not at all. Now let’s see a BRUTAL TAKEDOWN!
. . . man, I’m on a posting roll today.

Frankly, I’m a bit of a traditionalist on this topic. I like that MMA has evolved pas it’s early “kumite-”style karate vs. kung fu vs. jujitsu origins. The sport has firmed up, the champs defend their belts frequently, and there are only one or two competing leagues. In short, MMA suffers from few of the ailments that consistently trip up sports like boxing.
That said, next to a good boxing match, I find MMA really boring to watch. I actually think it was more fun when it was a bit of a sideshow. The sport has evolved and established itself, I’m just not sure I like what it’s evolved into.
Anyways, MMA is really popular in Canada, and it is high time Dana White started showing us some love. GSP is a great fighter, and a match with Serra should start things off in Canada with a bang. Whether rusty is a fan or not is irrelevant; this sport is getting big.
Slick vid - but that’s not the UFC.
UFC always fight inside their trademark Octagon ring with chain-link walls.
Also, GSP never actually asserts that MMA isn’t violent - he just suggets that there’s more to it than the violence. I have no idea what he’s talking about.
I agree with rusty to an extent - the matches these days are kind of boring. They are either over in a flash or devolve into long grab-ass sessions by the wall. Still, it’s nice that GSP will headlining the UFC’s Canadian debut.
See comment on “destiantion: SA”
also, I altered the post.
Did anyone see Kimbo knock Tank the fuck out? Pretty nice punch!
